Rocky is a 7 year old sable merle rough coated collie. He was neutered in April 2014. He has blue and brown color in his eyes for a very striking look.
He has a gentle, soft temperament with a low-key energy level. He is attentive and watchful, ever-hopeful for a pet or soft word. He is beginning to enjoy the little luxuries that other dogs take for granted - a soft bed, some time on the dog couch, and a few extra treats. When he arrived, I could not get him to lie on soft surfaces or take treats from my hand, but he has learned. He has a very contented deep sigh when he stretches on the cushions now. He has recently started rolling onto his back to solicit belly rubs. Rocky enjoys long soulful gazes with extended eye contact, giving you plenty of time to admire his beautiful eyes.
Rocky walks well on leash, and we have been building his muscle and stamina. He can walk for about a mile at a slower steady pace. He may benefit from a joint supplement to help some early arthritis, but it is important to continue slow, steady walking to improve his body condition.
Rocky has been fostering with other dogs (male and female) and enjoys their company. He gets along with cats. He should be monitored when introduced to new male dogs, especially if they are rowdy.
Rocky appears to really enjoy children. When watching TV recently, there was a crying child on the program. Rocky jumped up, circled the speakers several times, then softly woofed at my husband with the obvious message to "do something about that crying baby!"
He would be an excellent companion and really wants to bond with a permanent family. He is not destructive and has had a soft mouth with his stuffed animal toys. He sleeps in a crate, but he would be happiest with the freedom to roam the house once he is completely housebroken.
Housebreaking remains a challenge, but he is progressing. Rocky has had some significant physical challenges in his life with a history of being treated for heartworms and having surgery to correct a severe perineal hernia. He will need to continue a prescription diet for the foreseeable future. He can do stairs, but he is a little hesitant about them. Rocky is being fostered in Ohio.
